Break Up The Fallow Ground

For thus says the Lord to the men of Judah and Jerusalem:

“Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.” (Jeremiah 4:3) ”Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.” (Hosea 10:12) Dear Church, According to Wikipedia, fallowing (not following) is a farming technique in which arable land is left without sowing for one or more vegetative cycles. The goal of fallowing is to allow the land to recover and store organic matter while retaining moisture and disrupting the lifecycles of pathogens by temporarily removing their hosts. It is a period of rest and preparation for another agricultural season of sowing. Though this period is meant to make the ground more fruitful, these are also times when the land becomes overgrown with weeds and thorns because of the period of inactivity. The fallow ground then needs to be broken up to clear the field of this unwanted growth. I am careful not to overreach in my exegesis of the texts from Jeremiah and Hosea above but in a sense, we are like Israel and Judah in their time of prophetic ministry. We are in between periods of great revivals or spiritual awakening. We await another great move of God that matches His amazing exploits in the Book of Acts. When evangelism, mission and discipleship all come naturally as a church empowered by God’s anointing “turns the world upside down.” (Acts 17:6) Let us heed the call of these prophets to break up the spiritual fallow ground. Have weeds and thorns grown in place of fruits of righteousness? Has there been a cycle of inactivity and unfruitfulness that needs to be broken in our lives? Hosea says “sow for yourselves righteousness (and by doing so) reap steadfast love. We need to continue to work the ministry of Jesus in these times when the world is asleep in darkness. How do we see the next Great Awakening as according to Hosea 10:12? 1. Repentance (“sow for yourselves righteousness”). 2. Loving on others (“reap steadfast love”). 3. Prayer with Urgency (“for it is the time to seek the Lord”.) It all starts with a personal revival that leads to the corporate “breaking of the fallow ground” by the church of Christ. This will usher in a spiritual revival in families, neighborhoods, cities and the nation as Almighty God will “rain righteousness upon you”. May God’s anointing rest upon His church in these times. In Christ, Pastor Ramon
